The Beach Boys actually never sounded this good live. They are closer to the Association (IMHO) in recreating complex harmonies/countermelodies on stage. Interestingly, John has toured extensively with the BBs as their drummer.

People usually take the version they hear first as the better version. The reason these other acts did these songs is their admiration for the songs, and the Everlys. The acknowledgement these guys have received from generations of rockers that followed shows their influence.

The song was written during the War of 1812. It has nothing to do with the founding of the Unites States. It's one man's work.
Many Christmas standards were written by Jews. A song is a song.
Having said that, the song still gives me chills.
