You do get trainer- Mercenaries do upgrade to much higher hitpoints, and so do other units.

Also, those are the Petronas towers in Malaysia, not the WTC. Both go by the name of the Twin Towers so I can see why the confusion exists. The WTC was flattop and didn't have the stylish bridge between the two slender towers
