Funny you mentioned making your own and your quick story about buying one first. I ordered mine last night with a 26 in ditch blade (? have to start somewhere). Seemed utility. It's just so interesting to see the amount of cutting that can be done! I grew up on a weed whip/string trimmer. This is the way to go!
