since I don't have a camera, I'm using t his space to write what I would like to say. Sorry it's not a sound-byte, but I felt the subject important enough to take 10 hours to organize my passion into words. I cried while I wrote this, it is straight from my heart with love for our human community . please forward this to others... In light of what happened in Gaza dec 2008, I felt motivated to write a perspective with which some of you may agree and others disagree. The purpose though, is to ignite human rights and religious discussions of internal cogitation, as well as dinner table politic. Maybe even some political action? A phone call to representatives perhaps?(see the Jewish Voice for Peace email below my thoughts). Peace from within to all of you Mike/Bootz As a Jew growing up in a Jewish home, I took part in many Jewish rituals. From every Shabbat dinner at my Bubbie's and Zayda's house, then off to Temple, to Hebrew school and a Bar Mitzvah. Celebrating the festivals of Tu'Bishvat, Purim, Passover, Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashannah, while enjoying the Jewish cuisine of Kugel, Gefilta fish, and Kishka. As I was taking in the sights, sounds and smells of my ancestral culture, many lessons were being taught to me. The thing that was most pronounced, fortunately or unfortunately, was the fact that Jews have had to endure centuries of oppression along with the ideology that the Jewish Holocaust of World War II, not only can happen again, but will happen again, the moment we, as Jews, let our guard down. That is, fail to support Israel as A Jewish Nation. This was my introduction...or indoctrination to Zionism. Over time, I have found, that there has become, for many Jews, a redefining of Judaism born from the fear that was present at the end of World War II. Zionism, for many, is a synonym for Judaism that has become a dominant aspect of their identity with Judaism. Zionism, representing the right towards Jewish self determination at any expense, became the new identity for many Jews. This point is paramount to my understanding of the support for Zionism and Israel as a Jewish Nation. Today, there are still many Jews who subscribe to the notion that, Zionism is equivalent to Judaism. That Judaism is defined through Zionism and has become defined by ones attitude in support of, or against, the physical Nation of Israel as a Jewish Nation. Prior to 1948 the "Nation of Israel" referred to the people(jews) not to a physical place. For many Jews today, Judaism, unfortunately, is no longer defined by, first and foremost, the rituals or prayers one partakes in. In many Jewish communities, Judaism is now defined by how many times one can wrap the Israeli Flag around ones body. In most of the Temples I have been to, there is not only an American Flag, But an israeli flag as well, subconsciously I believe, enforcing the idea, that to be a Jew, is to hold dearly onto nationalistic Ideology. It is important to understand that to Many Jews, Zionism and the creation of Israel in 1948 is not seen as an attack or aggressive move towards the non-Jews in that region, but a reaction, not only from the Nazi governed Jewish holocaust of the time, but from centuries of oppression. The Zionist ideology and promise of a place where Jews are free from oppression, was indeed a powerful vision: the "Nation of Israel" would now have a physical home Just Imagine, for a moment, the relief and impassioned joy, that must have been felt by some Jews in 1948, with the manifestation of that Powerful Vision. A vision that demanded Jewish self determination, and freedom from oppression, and the chains of collective punishment. Jews... won that freedom from centuries of oppression at any expense... at any expense... at any expense... These are desperate words from a desperate people. A sect of humanity whose DNA has experienced centuries upon centuries, generations upon generations of Hate, beatings, exploitation and torture. Finally, a generation that see's the light of Justice. A generation that will not be oppressed. A generation where Jews will be treated like human beings with the rights of freedom and Justice and never again will the Jewish people fall under the hands of an oppressor.( go to next interest movie and shows)
