YouTube was never intentionally planned to become what it is today. In fact, it had been founded by three people, who only had intentions of uploading dinner party videos to the internet. Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim, were originally employees of PayPal, an online money transfer company. The domain name www.youtube.com was activated on the 15th of February, in 2005. In May of that year, a beta test version of the site was released to the public, resulting in a success after the official release in November, which drew over 65,000 uploads a day by July 2006. Market research claims that YouTube is the dominant provider of online video in the United States, with a market share of 43% and more than six billion video views by January 2009. Additionally information states that in 2007, YouTube consumed as much internet bandwidth as the entire internet did in 2000. In November 2006, a lawsuit was filed against YouTube.com, from a similar named site, utube.com. The reason for such action was that utube.com was being flooded with visitors on a regular basis who were looking for YouTube; afterward the site renamed itself to utubeonline.com. In November 2008, YouTube settled and agreement with MGM , Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS, allowing the companies to post full length films and television episodes on the site. The purpose was to assemble a competition against other sites who offered news material from NBC and Fox. On October 9th, 2009, CEO Chad Hurley announced that YouTube was raking in over one billion views, a day. Since its official release in 2005, the video sharing site has greatly flourished and continues to evolve, essentially becoming a reliable source for news media and other important information. It is now not only a video sharing website, but a diversity of ideas and people from all over the world, living up to its slogan, Broadcast Yourself.http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2006-10-11-youtube-karim_x
