The Life of Prophet Lut (AS)

Prophet Lut (AS) who was the nephew of Prophet Abraham (AS) was sent to people of three neighboring cities that were located where the dead sea now stands. In these cities, homosexuality for the first time took place and became common and accepted by people of these cities.

We also (sent) Lut: He said to his people: "Do ye commit lewdness such as no people in creation (ever) committed before you? [7:80]

For years Prophet Lut (AS) tried very hard to guide these people. He even married to a woman among them. Things only became worse. Homosexuality was practiced even more openly without Shame. Not everyone practiced homosexuality, but people approved of it. Prophet Lot spoke to them repeatedly,

"For ye practise your lusts on men in preference to women : ye are indeed a people transgressing beyond bounds." [7:81]

He was rejected,

And his people gave no answer but this: they said, "Drive them out of your city: these are indeed men who want to be clean and pure!" [7:82 ]

He warned them about the Wrath of Allah (SWT). They ridiculed him. They told Prophet Lut (AS) that he should bring on the Wrath of Allah (SWT) if he speaks the truth. Prophet Lut Prayed:

He said: "O my Lord! help Thou me against people who do mischief!" [29:30]




Allah (SWT) sent Angels Gabriel (AS), Michael (AS), and Azail (AS) to destroy these cities and their people as they only became worse with homosexuality became more common and more and more people came to accept this lifestyle despite years of preaching by Lut (AS).

The angels came to prophet Lut (AS) who at the time was working on his land outside of the city. They appeared in the form of three beautiful young men and asked prophet Lut (AS) for Shelter. When he saw the young men, he despaired as he did not know how to protect them from the people of the town.

When Our messengers came to Lut, he was grieved on their account and felt himself powerless (to protect) them. He said: "This is a distressful day." [11:77]

Prophet Lut (AS) brought them to his house under the cover of the night so that they are not seen by the people of the city. His wife, who was not a believer, ran out of the house as soon as he saw the young men. He notified the people of the town of her husband sheltering three beautiful young men.

A mob gathered outside of the Lut (AS) house demanding that he handover the young men.

And his people came rushing towards him, and they had been long in the habit of practicing abominations. He said: "O my people! Here are my daughters: they are purer for you (if ye marry)! Now fear Allah, and cover me not with shame about my guests! Is there not among you a single right-minded man?" They said: "Well dost thou know we have no need of thy daughters: indeed thou knowest quite well what we want!" [11:78, 79]


Prophet Lut (AS) prayed: "O my Lord! deliver me and my family from such things as they do!"[26:169] Holy Koran

As the mob became louder and start breaking into his house, Prophet Lut (AS) grew afraid as he could not protect his guests. He said: "Would that I had power to suppress you or that I could betake myself to some powerful support." [11:80]

Gabriel (AS) and others then revealed themselves to Prophet Lut (AS) and told him not to be afraid.
(The Messengers) said: "O Lut! We are Messengers from thy Lord! By no means shall they reach thee! now travel with thy family while yet a part of the night remains, and let not any of you look back: but thy wife (will remain behind): To her will happen what happens to the people. Morning is their time appointed: Is not the morning nigh?" [11:81]

As Prophet Lut (AS) was leading away his family and followers out of these cities, the wrath of Allah came down on the people of these cities. His wife who was not a believer decided to go back as she did not believe anything would happen. She was destroyed along with the other people by brimstones sent from hell. Gabriel (AS) then picked up the three cities and turned them upside down.

When Our Decree issued, We turned (the cities) upside down, and rained down on them brimstones hard as baked clay, spread, layer on layer,- [11:82] Holy Koran

From the destruction a sea was born called sea of Lut or Dead sea.
