I was raised in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Altoona PA, where the majestic and thunderous G.F. Steinmeyer organ is fully responsible for my love of the organ. The cathedral organ was featured on the Diane Bish TV program "The Joy of Music", and has been played in concert by organists Peter Richard Conte, Ken Cowan, Stefan Engels and others. Presently, I work in a local hospital ICU and spend a great deal of free time either listening to or learning organ music to use at church or for pleasure. I own a 2009 Allen organ and a 1992 Wurlitzer organ, and play every day. As soon as I sit down at the organ, my 8yr old Yorkie goes upstairs to bed. I guess because he knows I'm going to be sitting there for awhile !I lived in Ft. Lauderdale Florida for 6 years and returned to Pennsylvania in 2009 where I am once again near family and friends.
As a teenager, I studied music and learned the basics from Richard Kuiawa, then director of music at Bishop Guilfoyle High School, and director of the Keystone Chorale, as well as private teacher, and baritone soloist. He continues with the latter, as well as conducts a mens group called the Cantate Domino Singers and is director of music at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Altoona.
In 1986, at age 17, I was blessed to be given an organist position at Our Lady of Mt.Carmel Catholic Church in Altoona PA, where I played for Saturday 7pm and Sunday 11am Mass for 4 years, sharing the console with 2 other organists for the remaining Masses. It was a wonderful 3-manual organ, newly rebuilt by Petty-Madden Organbuilders of Hopewell, NJ.
Currently, I serve as part-time organist at Centre Presbyterian in New Park PA, on a 2-manual Kilgen pipe organ. I play for the children's choir once a month, and substitute as needed. I play most Sundays during the summer months while the adult choir and their organist are off. This year, I also sang for Easter Sunrise service, and several other special or holiday services, including two upcoming services in July and August. Soli' Deo Gloria !
Goosebumps- How I would have loved to be sitting somewhere in that church just absorbing every note !
