WW1, German unrestricted subarine warfare sinks cruise liner lusitania killing 100 or so americans, also germany sent the zimmerman telegram to mexico encouraging them to attack the United States, therefore we go to war.

WW2. Japan bombs Pearl Harbor Germany declares war on the United States. We retaliate by seizing western europe via operation overlord. V.E. day occurs less than a year after the invasion of normandy.

Neither had anything to do with saving royal ass.
