What was the name of that band again?! From 1987 to 1989, John Berndt, Neil Feather, John Sheehan, & I (tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE) had an improvising group called "Something that Dissolved the Shadow of Something that was next to Something that Burned Twice, Once". Or was it "Something that dissolved the Shadow of Something that was next to Something that Burned Twice"? That was the way we were listed on our only audio publication - the tape release entitled "November 21 '87EV to April 16 '89EV (as edited by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE)". Then again, on the tape release entitled "November 21 '87EV to April 16 '89EV (as edited by John Berndt)" we were called "The Thing which Dissolves the Shadow of Something which was once close to Something that Once Burned Twice". &, yet, on the poster that advertised the gig that this movie is from we were called "Something that Dissolves the Shadow of Something Which Was Once Close to Something that Once Burned Twice" but in the actual movie itself we're called Something That Dissolves the Shadow of Something That was Next to Something That Combusted Once. Twice. One might get the impression that this particular group had a strange sense of humor.. or were pranksters.. or confused.. or SOMETHING THAT DISSOLVED THE SHADOW.. At any rate, in our 2&1/2 yrs of existence we only performed publicly twice & this movie is from our 2nd & last gig at Brad Hwang's wonderful underground warehouse club in BalTimOre: DisPlace. It took Neil & myself 20 hrs to set up our equipment. John Berndt put in about 5 to 7 hrs. John Sheehan had everyone else set up his equipment, showed up right around starting time, & didn't cooperate w/ the rest of us. Then we played for about 4 hrs. This is hereby reduced to 16:48 & broken into 2 parts: Something That Dissolves the Shadow of Something That was Next to Something That Combusted Once. Twice & ":November 4th 1989EV Dis Place BAL TIM ORE". I'm sure you've heard before that people used to be shorter. Well, 20 yrs ago, reality in general was alot more wiggly - as this document attests. Joanne Bernititus provided the moving camera & Austin Newsome provided the one on the tripod. If you want to read a brief description of this event go to entry 131 @: http://www.fyi.net/~anon/MereOutline1... - December 27, 2009 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

"VEX" stood for "Vernal EquinoX". VEXes were social events held on the Spring Equinoxes from, perhaps, 1989 to 1992. These events were continuations of the previous series of Time Traveler parties organized by the Krononautic Organism under the direction of Richard (Tryzno Ellsberry) wch culminated in the BIG EVENT to meet people from the future on March 9th, 1982. This film was made as a celebration of the 1990 VEX held at Swan Park in Baltimore on March 20, 1990. Swan Park was adjacent to the giant concrete pillars that held aloft a limited access highway. That's where this film was shot. I had graffitied one large letter per pillar in such a way so that if one stood at a particular place, also marked, that one cd read what these letters spelled out. Much of this film presents that. Another thread running thru it is the standing up of eggs on end by my girlfriend of the time, DeeDee Ranged. We were doing this b/c we'd heard that a woman artist organized annual events in a park in NYC for this purpose on the equinox - wch was, supposedly, the only time of the yr when one cd do this. According to Cecil Adams, of "The Straight Dope", this is actually possible any time. Dick Turner composed a piece called "Eloquent Voices" for car horns. A questionnaire was given to the people in their cars who answered the questions by beeping their horns in prescribed ways. Obviously, Dick's piece is the soundtrack here. This piece cd be sd to be part of a tradition that also includes Al Hansen's "Car Bibbe" (1958/59) & Robert Moran's "Thirty Nine Minutes for Thirty Nine Autos" (August 1969). One of the reasons for posting this film on YouTube is to promote Dick's work - I'm currently publishing a limited edition double K7 release of Dick's music that includes 2 short bklts - one of wch includes material about his "Smile Machine" invention. Also seen are the cars weaving around thru the pillars & Reverend Paul Summers' ceremonial magick. As a site-specific installation, Doug Retzler made a giant bird-house wch he installed high up on one of the pillars & wch can be seen at the end of the film. - December 25, 2009 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

At UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County Campus) in the mid-1980s, I witnessed a presentation of oboist/composer Joseph Celli's video piece entitled "Snare Drum for Camus" on 2 TVs flanking the stage. This piece was an overheard shot of a snare drum being played on by his son Camus. At UMBC, the color on one TV made the snare drum vaguely reminiscent of a watermelon. On the other TV, perhaps it looked like Chinese food. At this late date, over 24 yrs later, I don't remember very clearly. At any rate, I decided to make a take-off vaudeo where instead of a snare drum there really wd be Chinese food - in this case in a wok. I then had 4 people play improvised percussion on it. The main percussionist, an excellent drummer who I often collaborated w/, was Herr Brain Storm (aka Brian Wolle). Also performing were Dan Carney, composer; Chip Tinkler (aka Chris Mason), poet & performer w/ "The Tinklers"; & Doug Retzler, artist. At my request, the cameraperson, Lizard Media Systems, created non-referential 'titles' to surround the circle of the wok as extra visual spice. In 1985 such in-camera-generated titles were somewhat of a new thing. - December 25, 2009 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE

"Sound Along w/ t he Bounding Ball(s)" is my 31st movie & one of my worst ones. Nonetheless, it has redeeming qualities. I like that its main subject is a player piano. I like that it was the 1st film where I used a hole-punch to punch out circles of film wch were then re-placed. I like that it's audience participatory. I like some of the superimpositions. I like that it was my 1st film in English AND French. I like that it was designed to be both front AND rear screen projected. After screening it while touring in 1986, I mostly 'retired' the film until almost 21 yrs later in 2007 when I brought it out in honor of being able to play w/ visiting veteran improviser LaDonna Smith @ Jefferson Presents in Pittsburgh. The version presented here combines 2 live soundtracks from my "6 Finger Crossed Country T.Ore/Tour" in 1986 w/ the 'studio' vocals I added later PLUS the Smith gig. There are 2 prints of this film: one in negative in a library collection & my own print, slightly better edited, in positive. For this version I intercut a video transfer of the negative version w/ the JP projection version of the positive one. LaDonna (well.. mostly her hat) can be glimpsed on the left & Steve & Greg can be briefly glimpsed on the right when Gordon's camerawork pans to them (& when I adjust the brightness & contrast & otherwise key them in). The 16mm camerwork on the original film was done by Steve Estes. - December 24, 2009 notes from tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE
