About Adaptive Ski Racer, Mark Urich

Mark was born with a birth defect known as Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency or P.F.F.D. , where his femur was underdeveloped, resulting in an amputation of his foot and ankle when he was 2. He has worn a prosthetic right leg ever since and currently wears a Plie 2.0 micro-processor knee from Freedom Innovations, which is pretty rad. Last year, his awesome girlfriend Alana Nichols introduced him to adaptive ski racing and he fell in love with the sport...and the girl! Mark is currently racing for the N.S.C.D. in Winter Park, CO and his ultimate goal is to compete in the 2014 Paralympics Winter Games in Sochi, Russia and bring home a Gold for the USA!

About this user

Hey everyone! My name is Mark Urich and I am a disabled alpine ski racer. I was born on October 25th, 1985 in Denver, CO with a condition known as Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency or P.F.F.D. where my right femur didn't fully develop with the rest of my leg. My doctors and parents thought it best to amputate what was left of my leg in order to better fit a prosthetic. I was fitted for my first "robot leg" (as I called it) when I was 1 1/2 and haven't stopped moving since! With the help and support of my awesome mother, Cheryl Martin, I started playing sports when I was 5 and continued to play competitively through high school. I played football, baseball, basketball, hockey, track and field, cycling, rock-climbing, and downhill mountain biking. I made varsity as a sophomore at my high school for football and haven't ever lost that competitive edge. In college I rowed varsity crew at the University of Colorado in Boulder for 3 years where I competed all over the U.S. in events such as the Head of the Iowa and the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston. After college I took a break from sports and unfortunately became influenced by my job as a bar manager to start drinking heavily. During this dark time in my life, I fell into an unhealthy pattern of partying and being unproductive which eventually led to my "rock bottom" where I had lost my ambitions and dreams and replaced them with booze. In May of 2010 fortunately had a self-awakening and decided enough was enough. I quit drinking cold turkey and almost instantly my life turned around. I had found once again, my self-respect, self-worth and those goals and ambitions that I had so once desired. Soon after, I met the love of my life Alana Nichols and she proved to me just how wonderful life can be. In November 2010 Alana introduced me to disabled sports and I fell in love with ski racing. Since then, I have become fully dedicated to the sport and have made it my life goal to compete and win gold medals in the Paralympics. I am currently writing this short biography in Mt. Hood, Oregon training with my race team and can honestly say that I have never been more happy in my life or have ever had more self-worth. I want to thank you for reading my story and I encourage everyone to aim high, live life to the fullest, and realize that no matter how "messy" things can get, being alive is beautiful.
