Gughe Association seeks to create awareness of the diverse cultures and peoples living around the Omo Valley region of southwest Ethiopia. The name Gughe comes from the local name for the highest mountain of southern Ethiopia.
Gughe Association is based in Arba Minch near Lake Abaya and Lake Chamo in the Gamo Gofa zone of SNNPRS.
Arba Minch is home to the
Millenium Festival of a Thousand Stars 2007
a three day event attracting over 60,000 spectators which celebrates the diverse music and culture of the region.
This festival is held in December every year. The event this year will take place 15-17th December 2007 and is organised by Gughe Indigenous Art and Music Association and funded by The Christensen Fund of Palo Alto, California.
This part of Ethiopia is home to over 50 cultural groups. The people speak various languages and have distinctive traditions of which some are very striking and easily recognisable.
A great variety of music and dance styles can be found here. From lowland nomad pastoralists to settled highland agriculturalists, the region is filled with natural and cultural diversity, to hold the interest and admiration of any visitor.
With the impact of modernity much of this heritage is being compromised. The Gughe Association seeks to build awareness of this remarkable region, to enhance mutual understanding and appreciation, and to bring proper recognition to the traditions and lifestyles of the peoples living here.
