Are the last parts from Folk Song Suite or something?

Good lord, the oboe solo from 1:33 to 1:50 annoys the hell out of me. That one note Borodin keeps altering...it just sounds so wrong!

That is, unless I've somehow found two videos where the oboist makes the same mistake? Highly doubtful.

So I was messing around and thinking about how someone could sing this song in French, and I realized that "who made you king of anything?" rhymes at the same spots in French ("qui t'a fait roi de n'importe quoi?"), even has right about the same number of syllables. Even if it's totally unintent...

Agreed that you should audition for American Idol! Rochelle, you have a sort of lower/deeper quality about your voice that's really distinct and original, and gives you a full kind of sound. Singing well with a unique voice is brings you far!

I realize that it's really sweet for a performer to hear people singing along to their song, but when it's THIS popular and you're just doing variations , it just seems so rude that they all sing along...don't they want to HEAR them singing? Certainly the performers' voices are better than the au...

As much as I really like how expressive her natural movement is, as a clarinet player myself I can't imagine how shaking her head or throwing the instrument left and right doesn't affect her playing. Doesn't it change her embouchure?

I totally agree, clar39. It's a good recording until it gets to the brass feature towards the end...I have my own lamentations as a woodwind about standing during brass features, but meh, it's not important. Anyway, YES, they lose it in that section.

(There are obviously other variables in this situation, but anyway....) You know a rendition of a symphonic piece is good when you can see the conductor sweating. THAT'S intensity.

You know this must be incredibly intense live when you can barely hear the triangle part even when it focuses on that percussionist. And that theme starting at 1:50 -ish is so good!

I think something's getting lost in translation here. In musical terms, a "dark" sound is typically one that is smooth, controlled, "velvety" in texture, masterful, and not shrill or piercing. It's different from the typical perception of "dark" as murky or evil in some way.

For those upset by the tempo, it seems to me to be less than 180bpm (in cut time), so please don't exaggerate. It does sound fast, and is certainly over tempo for a British march, but it's certainly not 200 or 300+ that some have suggested.

@notasharecropper It's not necessarily the best recording...the brass may very well have been articulating, but it's lost behind the quality of the recording equipment. :\

@Keira13 Oboe too, but they're usually too quiet to hear under a clarinet and trumpet...we tried using just the oboe solo at this section during one of our rehearsals this weekend, and it was just not loud enough.

Just played this at the TPSMEA All-State band concert last night, and I think we played this a little better, judging at least by the first minute or so...and faster.

I think this is definitely Eric Whitacre's best band piece. It's so catchy! I could sing it all day...but I'd rather play it, if I could! One of very few songs that has trombones that I like--(sorry guys, I'm a woodwind. I feel like that should explain.)

I see myself, and all of the people from my school who went! This was so much fun to play!

Why is Britney Spears cast as a French horn? That sounds a little weird...I realize it cuts through the texture, but certainly she doesn't sing in that register...

I think it's funny when people post things like, "I'm refined/sophisticated/special because I think this music is so beautiful, I use it to nap/sleep/over-relax all the time." If you actually liked it and listened to it, it wouldn't put you to sleep...

@DunNotCome I agree...the continuity of some of the themes is lost because the tempo undulates too much.

Gosh, just look at the dampers on the left end of the inside of the piano as he plays...even his pedaling is beautiful and smooth!

I wish everyone could hear the chorus of this song! It just feels like your eyes are opening, even if it's not a new concept.

Kim Walker is such an AMAZING worship leader, and vocalist to boot! She's got such a unique voice and she has a huge low register and a powerful higher one, which makes her totally fit to lead worship. God is HOLY!

With her little pseudo-beatboxing at the beginning, it sounds like this song naturally should be played directly after "Lacrimosa". Anyone else think so?

Oh my gosh...I'm the principal clarinetist in my high school symphonic band, and we've got about 20-30 people in our section. Bliss at this age is better than the majority of them. Oh. My. Gosh.
