Imagine if a disaster on the scale of 9/11 happened every seven hours, all night and all day, every day, forever. That is the reality of poverty, starvation and preventable disease. As caused by capitalism. Poverty, war, climate change and countless other evils are all neccessary consequences of our capitalist system. We have more than enough technology and resources to solve these problems, but they will never be solved while the system is preoccupied with profit, and a system driven purely by profit is what capitalism is.

Did you vote in the last election in your country? If you live in an industrialised western nation, you probably answered no to that question. You have rightly realised that there is very little difference between the main parties, and none of them will adequately tackle the real problems facing your country and the world. This is because it is impossible to tackle these problems within the framework of capitalism. All governments are forced to provide a favourable environment in which for capitalist corporations to operate, lest a loss of investment lead to unemployment and economic collapse. A favourable environment for capitalists is neccessarily unfavourable to ordinary citizens.

Now you might be thinking, "but capitalism is just the natural order of things. We've always had capitalism. It is simply what happens when you get a large group of people together in one place." You would be wrong. Capitalism has been around for only 300 years, a very short time given how long humans have been on the Earth. It emerged from feudalism, which was basically a massive protection racket. It's introduction was characterised by flogging, branding, hanging and all sorts of other vicious methods to force the citizens to comply. Capitalism is based upon the ownership of the means of creating wealth by the capitalist or master class and the consequent enslavement of the vast majority, the working class, by whose labour alone wealth is produced. It is testament to the capitalists' ingenuity that they have convinced the working class, who massively outnumber them, of the neccessity of the system of slavery which they have created. But then they have had 300 years to perfect their deception.

Now here comes the punchline: the best (some would say only) alternative to capitalistism is socialism. True socialism, without money, without leaders, without ownership of the means of creating wealth. Now you might point to the Soviet era, saying, "but socialism's been tried; it didn't work." Again, you'd be wrong. The organisational system in the communist countries was no closer to socialism than we are today. It was merely another form of capitalism: state capitalism, where the means of production are owned by the state on behalf of capitalists. Real socialism would have no governments, no borders and no leaders, and the means of production would be owned by everyone (or no-one, which is the same thing). It would be a return to the social system we had when we were hunter-gatherers, back when people didn't have to fear other people.

The only way to bring about a socialist system will be a peaceful revolution utilising the tools of democracy we have available today, and based on the understanding of the vast majority of people of the need for change. If that doesn't happen then poverty, famine, war and climate change will continue unchecked. And that's why I've written this, to convince you and others like you of the need for socialism.
