About the last himeyuri

I am attempting to retell the stories of the Himeyuri -- also known as Star Lily nurse corps -- during the battle of Okinawa in WWII. A group of 222 teenage girls volunteered to care for maimed and wounded soldiers of the Imperial Army in the caves of mainland Okinawa as the U.S. military invaded.

During the last days of the battle the Himeyuri were suddenly disbanded, forcing the girls and their teachers to try to make their way back across the island to their homes.

As a nurse aide myself I feel this story has universal appeal, not just for the survivors of the war who are now in their late 70s and 80s but for everyone who has made it their responsibility to take care of others in times of great peril.
