The accolades read like a Brit or Grammy award ceremony. But Oh Laura are a brand new talent on the brink of seizing a worldwide audience.
First there's Frida's intoxicating vocals -- a slight huskiness followed by a heart-wrenching upward lilt that weaves it's way to your soul, leaving you in no doubt that this is someone who lives inside her songs. As Radio 2's Bob Harris has said, "It sounds like a whole life has been lived through Frida's vocals".
Swedish born singer Frida Öhrn grew up in a single parent family. Nevertheless it was music that remained the unifying force at home -- with her mother teaching her to sing and her father revealing the magic of song writing and guitar playing: "Music was everywhere when I was little, my mum was always singing to me and my dad showed me all kinds of music -- from country to Elvis and from jazz to The Beatles".
Frida always knew her voice was her special gift, and on leaving school set about entertaining audiences in restaurants and nightclubs and performing in a string of local bands in countless different styles. For fun she still sings with two of these bands; 'Cookies and Beans', a country combo and 'Reimers' an old school jazz band. Outside the world of music she's also the voice of 'Susie' on the Nickelodeon cartoon 'All Grown Up' as well as performing the poetry of Nobel Prize winner Par Lagerquist.
But it's 'Oh Laura' where Frida has found the most simple and elegant home for her voice. The band came together two years ago when songwriters and part time social workers Jocke Olovsson and Jörgen Kjellgren saw her singing in a Stockholm club. They were simply floored by her voice and instantly knew they had found the perfect compliment for there compositions. Shortly afterwards a couple of Frida's friends, Rikard Lidham (bass) and Magnus Olsson (drums) joined as the rhythm section and 'Oh Laura' -- named after David Lynch's mystery girl -- was formed.
After a series of live shows in Sweden, the band were quickly signed by independent label Cosmos and soon after holed up in a recording studio with Swedish production team MixInc. Their intoxicating and raw first single 'Release Me' became the most downloaded song in Scandinavia, shot to No 1 on iTunes within a week and won Song Of The Year at the Swedish equivalent of the Ivor Novello Awards. In addition both national Radio station P3 and The Swedish Music Publishers Association (SMFF) awarded 'Release Me' Song of the Year. The subsequent album - 'A Song Inside My Head A Demon In My Bed' - went gold within a fortnight.
Frida describes the album as a love story, "But a fragile love story where something uncomfortable and uncertain is ever present". The album draws you into a heavenly experience of bittersweet emotions, sometimes dark and threatening but also a delicious and liberating journey through shamelessly beautiful melodies.
