Sometimes RNLI volunteers help to rescue animals - the main reason for this is so that their owners or well-intentioned passers-by don't put themselves at risk by trying to rescue the animal themselves.
Animal rescues often provide fantastic training opportunities for our crews too, developing and refining skills that they can call on when tasked to other rescues to help people.
The Royal National Lifeboat Institution is the charity that saves lives at sea . Our volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the UK and Irish coasts. We operate 234 lifeboat stations and have lifeguard units on 160 beaches around the UK. We are independent of HM Coastguard and the government, and we depend on the generosity of people like you to maintain our rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824, our lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 139,000 lives.
