Basso Profundo - Decending Scale A2 to A0.wmv
An old practice video I found of a decending scale. I found this a very good way of building volume and evening out the tone on the very low notes....

After about A1 (first A below the bass staff, second A from the bottom on a piano), the voice no longer sounds legit, but gets quite Strohbassy. However, anyone who can sing to that A1 with full, genuine tone still deserves considerable praise.

I didn't think Pinza's low D would prove the best, since some of the other basses, such as Frick, Szekely, and Talvela, were more obviously bass than the great Italian. Yet Pinza's D does surpass all the others.

Ezio Pinza sings "O wie will ich triumphieren" from Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He does the whole thing in Italian.

This might not be the version Pinza recorded in 1946 with Bruno Walter conducting. This recording may well date from the late twenties or the thirties. Regardless, Pinza shows fine command of the deep stuff and a wonderful sound throughout this very demandind aria.

Hann was clearly an out-and-out basso, not a tweener. His performance of this very difficult aria ranks with the stellar jobs List and Kipnis uncorked.

A beautiful job, and F-D pronounces English well. F-D did not have ideal vocal resources for Elijah as Schorr, Bockelmann and the younger Hotter did have, but he at least had sense enough to sing this aria on his own vocal terms.

A fabulous performance, from someone who had the right vocal marbles for Elijah. The part is too high for a bass and too heavy for a lyric baritone. Schorr's tweener/low baritone had the right tessitura for the part and the necessary weight and depth of sound. Plus, he sang the piece beautifully,...

Schorr's actual birthyear was 1888.
Friedrich Schorr was indeed a very great artist. He and Rudolf Bockelmann were the two greatest Wagner baritones of the 1920-1945 era, and two of the most magnificent Wagner baritones of all time. Schorr's voice did not record particularly well (Bockelmann's r...
Interestingly, Schorr sings this song in B-flat major (the original key is C major, for a tenor). Since Schorr's voice was just high enough to be a baritone, one would think that he would have sung the song in A major. However, he sings with such exquisite ease and control as to validate and vind...
