Hi - Another invention: Just got this thing figured out and built -- a four-day project with a number of challenges, but am happy with the results. This thing's scale, tuning and fingering layout is the same as a metal hang drum, obviously with a lot different tone/sound. It uses bronze-wound guitar strings -- with same tension as on a guitar. Seven strings run down the instrument's side and the central "ding" runs down the middle. I've just put basic building information on my webpage at: http://www.ehhs.cmich.edu/~dhavlena/ should anyone want to duplicate this beast. One advantage over a metal hang drum is that the strings can be tuned any way you want. The tuning here is D minor pentatonic (same as in my PVC tubing instrument YouTube video). Despite the gawky appearance, the action/mechanism works quickly and is quite responsive, with no "bounce" and very little wood clatter.
PLEASE NOTE: A real, Swiss-made hang drum is VERY difficult to obtain these days. A ray of hope is on the horizon however-- Pantheon Steel, a maker of beautiful steel drums ("steel pans") is researching and experimenting -- with the intention of producing hang drums (under a different name) for sale. Please contact them at pantheonsteel.com and encourage them! They're looking for signs of interest at this time. Thanks.

Art photos of Cher from the mid 1960's along with her very first recording, "Ringo, I Love You (Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!) which she recorded under the name, Bonnie Jo Mason. More about this song in Cher history Cher at the time was 16 and was dating the much older Sonny (he was already 27) who was working for record producer Phil Spector at Gold Star Studios in Hollywood.[ With encouragement from Sonny, Cher who was studying acting at the time, started as a session singer, and sang backup on several of Spector's classic recordings, including The Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Loving Feeling", The Crystals' "Da Doo Ron Ron" and The Ronettes' "Be My Baby".
Her first solo recording was the unsuccessful novelty single "Ringo, I Love You," released under the pseudonym of Bonnie Jo Mason and produced by Phil Spector.
"Ringo, I Love You" along with the flip side "Beatle Blues" was the first single released on Phil Spector's Annette 1000 label on March 4, 1964 (Cher had turned 17).
Clocking in at just under one minute fifty seconds it is now a piece of musical history.
Here are the lyrics if you wanna zip up your Beatle boots and sing along....
Ringo, I love you yeah yeah yeah More than anything in this world I wanna be your only girl Please let me hold your ... Ringo, they say yeah yeah yeah I'll never get to hold it tight But still I dream of you at night Please let me hold your hand
I want to run my fingers Through your hair I want to let you know How much, how much I care
Ringo, I love you yeah yeah yeah More than anything in this world I wanna be your only girl Please let me hold your ... Ringo ... Ringo More than anything I want to wear your ring Oh Ringo ... I love you ... I wanna be your girl ...girl ... girl ... yeah ... yeah ...

I directed this music video for the all-girl band Pulsallama. Part of the original line-up, Ann Magnuson had recently left the group and went off on her own (she does it all, sing, comedy, performance). Pulsallama grew out of that fertile scene at Club 57 in New York's East Village in the early 80s. Club 57 alum include Kenny Scharf, Keith Haring and the Hairspray team of Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. The women of Pulsallama are all stars but a special mention goes to Wendy Wild who died prematurely in 1996. She was a local legend in the East Village who among many other things helped start Wigstock. That's Wendy as the hunched "old woman" who plays "steel drum" towards the end of the video. Directed & edited by Paul Dougherty.
