Yu Oda (b. September 22, 1983, Ebina)
Japanese composer, hichiriki player, and the director of Looptail and Amsterdam Collage Ensemble currently living in Amsterdam

Oda was born in Japan and started his musical activity playing and composing in a rock band. After finishing his high school, he moved to Los Angeles, where he studied composition with Liviu Marinescu and earned the bachelor's degree at California State University, Northridge. In Los Angeles, he was a member of the Taiko Ensemble at the University and Kinnara Gagaku Ensemble at Senshin Buddhist Temple as a hichiriki player.

In 2008, Oda moved to Amsterdam, where he attended the master program of Conservatorium van Amsterdam in composition studying with Wim Henderickx, Willem Jeths, and Rafael Reina. He graduated from the program in 2011. While he was a student, he has had lessons with Allain Gaussin, Fabio Nieder, Misato Mochizuki, Brian Ferneyhough, Stefano Gervasoni, Tristan Murail, and Klaas de Vries.

As a composer, Oda has worked with Asko/Shoenberg Ensemble, Ensemble 10/10, Joint Venture Percussion Duo, Looptail, Amsterdam Collage Ensemble, Koto player Makiko Goto, Cologne Gagaku Ensemble, as well as the other musicians. And, his music has been nominated for Gaudeamus Prize 2011, a finalist of Henriette Bosmansprijs and Tera de Marez Oyensprijs2011, awarded honorable mention of 32nd Irino Prize, and outstanding composition student of 2007&2008 and world music student of 2008 in California State University, Northridge.

Currently, he is a member of Cologne Gagaku Ensemble, the director of Looptail and Amsterdam Collage Ensemble, as well as an active composer based in Amstedam.

１９８３年９月２２日神奈川県生まれ。中学高校時代のバンド活動にて作曲を始める。２００３年カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスに移住し、カリフォルニア州立大学ノースリッジ校にてリヴィウ・マリネスク氏に作曲を師事する。２００８年に同校を卒業する。ロサンゼルスでは、作曲活動の他に洗心寺緊那羅雅楽会に参加し、雅楽の研究と篳篥の演奏に取り組む。これらの活動が大学に評価され、２００７、２００８年作曲科部門優秀賞を、２００８年ワールドミュージック科部門優秀賞を受賞する。

カリフォルニア州立大学ノースリッジ校卒業後、アムステルダムに移住し、アムステルダム音楽院にてヴィム・ヘンデリックス、ウィレム・イェツ、ラファエル・レイナの各氏に作曲を師事する。その他にも、アレン・ゴーサン、ファビオ・ニーダー、ブライアン・ファーニホー、ステファノ・ジェルバソーニ、望月京、トリスタン・ミュライユ、クラース・デフリースの各氏に指導を受ける。２０１１年に同音楽院作曲家修士課程を卒業する。

作品はこれまでに、アスコ／ショーンベルグ・アンサンブル、アンサンブル１０／１０、ジョイントベンチャー・パーカッションデュオ、ループテール、アムステルダム・コラージュアンサンブル、琴奏者・後藤真起子、ケルン雅楽などによって、オランダを中心に演奏されている。『２０１１年ガウデアムス賞』ノミネート作品、『２０１１年ヘンリエッテ・ボスマンス賞』ファイナリスト作品、『第３２回入野賞』佳作に選考されている。

現在はオランダを中心に、作曲家／篳篥奏者として活動している。また、２０１１年に結成した現代音楽アンサンブルの『ループテール(Looptail)』と『アムステルダム・コラージュアンサンブル(Amsterdam Collage Ensemble)』のディレクターとしての活動も表現手法の一環として行っている。
