First sung by Jackie De Shannon in 1963, written by Sonny Bono and Jack Nitzsche. To me, Smokie's version has better, richer sound than The Searchers' one, which does not mean that the later is bad. Still, the Searchers played by the rules of another era (sound, behavior etc).
