The New York Taxi Workers Alliance is a membership based not-for-profit organization fighting for the rights of NYC's 50,000+ licensed yellow taxi drivers.

Founded in 1998, NYTWA is the 15,000+ member strong union of NYC yellow taxicab drivers. We fight for justice, rights, respect and dignity for the over 50,000 licensed men and women—with 25,000 steady drivers—who labor 12-hour shifts with little pay and no benefits or protection in the city's mobile sweatshop. Our members come from every community, garage, and neighborhood. We are the first non-collective bargaining agent member of a Central Labor Council in the USA, voted into NYC CLC in 2007 and granted a national charter by the AFL-CIO in 2011. We are also founding members of the 30-city, 3-continent (and growing) International Taxi Workers Alliance.

It was the yellow taxicab that originally received the two way radio dispatch system that is used in the outer boroughs. This began during the early 1970s as a TLC experiment. Unfortunately, the sucess of the experiments caused a shortage of taxicabs in Manhattan, and as a result, the two way radios were pulled out of the taxicab. Each radio dispatch owner had the option of getting a second radio dispatch car or selling their radio. This was to bring the yellow cabs back fully into Manhattan, thus the birth of a second competative industry in NYC. The TLC thinks only of their own pockets. They do not care about the laborer and will do anything or create any illusion to steal from the working class to fill their coffers of wasteful spending. From an old timer with a good memory.

Good to see you on you tube. Taxi drivers need a voice that can be heard.

On this day -- September 11-- I would like to remember the countless compassionate and courageous acts on part of taxi drivers who offered free rides not only on the day of the attack but for months, and helped keep the city moving. Many drivers stood up and intervened in the hate crimes that their colleagues faced in the wake of the attacks. They continue to do so.
