Regarding Metal Slug done correctly in 3D, essentially that's Gears of War. Watch a video of Metal Slug, then watch a video of Gears of War, and you'll see a ton of elements that are the same. It's almost as if they copied Metal Slug.
Just look at the shape of the explosions of the MS grenade...
