About Wendy Phua

I am a solo bassist from Singapore and my live rig consist of 4/5-string fret/fretless bass, Boss GT6B, Boss RC-50 looper. Apart from honing my craft as a musician, I'm constantly collaborating with other musicians to expand my musical horizons. These days I primarily devote my time to perform at sessions and composing/recording.

With a fresh approach to the bass and a fearlessness to match, Singapore's leading female Wendy Phua has performed with international artistes like James LoMenzo (Megadeth), Mel Gayner (Simple Minds), Shaggy, Emma Shapplin and Riki Hendrix.

In 2008, she released Singapore's first and only bass solo EP "Between Here And Then" which featured her original compositions in a range of styles from classical to new age. The EP went on to receive favourable reviews in Bass Frontiers Magazine and Czech publication Muzikus, with sales reaching as far as America and Japan. Wendy was later signed on in the same year by Yamaha Singapore as its first female bass endorser, and an endorsement with KLOTZ Audio Interface Systems. She has appeared on interviews for NewsRadio 93.8 FM, Lush 99.5FM, Redifussion, and Channel NewsAsia Primetime Morning.

Wendy is noted for her use of two-handed finger-tapping on the bass, chordal playing, bowing on the electric bass and extensive usage of music technology in performances from live-looping to multi-tracking on the iPhone.

Currently playing both electric and double bass, Wendy's first foray into music began she was enrolled in classical piano lessons at age 6. Inspired by the music of Jamiroquai, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Dave Weckl, Pat Metheny and Marcus Miller, she later went on to play the bass and armed with a strong foundation in music, was invited to play and record with bands in genres as diverse as funk, soul, progressive rock, and jazz. Shows that Wendy has played at include the MTV Asia Awards, Mosaic Music Festival, Singapore Wine and Jazz Festival, ESPNStar Sports X-Games Asia and Baybeats Music Festival.

Aside from performing, holding bass clinics for Yamaha, and giving private bass lessons, Wendy also produces inflight radio shows for carriers like Singapore Airlines and Air China, and has worked with award-winning presenters from BBC, in addition to liaising with major record labels worldwide.

Her on-going personal projects are Tessera (all-female jazz band) and Ootini! (world/soul group), and she is currently self-producing her full-length solo album.
