The review is pretty well on the mark— this album and 'Object 47' both could have been very good five- or six-song EPs.

'Mekon Headman' is nice, well done, I like it. But Wire isn't supposed to be "nice, well done, I like it." At their best they were more like "Holy shit, WTF was THAT?" Bruce Gilbert was the WTF factor.

Worked on a show with this guy about seven years ago. He showed up early and tuned all the guitars, replacing a couple strings as necessary—and not just his, the whole band's, basses too. I thought, "Damn, this guy is his own backline crew." I'm sure if the bass drum had needed a new skin that...

I miss Bill as a vocalist. His singing was just as distinctive as his drumming.

Johnny Adams passed away in Baton Rouge 12 years ago today (9/14/98). He had stomach cancer. I put his obituary up by the jukebox the next night in the bar where I worked, but only a few locals even knew who he was.
