Ladies n genlemen, please be putting your hands together for Mr Scruff and his latest phonographic recording, Music Takes Me Up.
DJ and tea entrepeneur Mr Scruff and his all-singing chum, Alice Russell both like music, so they decided to write a song about it. After disrupting, destroying and damaging dancefloors with the resulting ditty for most of 2008, Ninja finally managed to prise the master out of Scruff's greasy mitts for five minutes and pressed the monster on vinyl. Hooray! Pure jazz-soul-funk-floor loveliness with ghostly backing vox, ridiculous lungs, rock solid breaks and so on. Here comes the hot-Stepney.

Another outing for the fantastic "Get A Move On" track which has fast become a favourite since it was first released in May 1999. This time, however, the single also features "Ug" a track not previously available except on Ninja Tunes Xen Cuts compilation. The demand for "Get A Move On" has just grown and grown and since it sold out when first released on Ninja Tune. Its subsequent deletion meant that though everyone could hear it (just listen to any TV programme to hear it as backing music) nobody could buy it which prompted the nice bods at Ninja to re-release it.
Mr Scruff has been reaching more people as hes gone along. France Telecom (the French equivalent of BT) were suitably impressed with him and used "Get A Move On" as part of their national TV advertising campaign, as did Volvo in N. America and Germany - the Scruffy one didn't see it as something to get excited about. And he's got more fans. Most notably, Madonna recently said in Mixmag of music she was playing at home, "And Mr Scruff I love, that weird little album ('Keep It Unreal') that's got so much personality". Mr Scruff was characteristically unimpressed.
His DJing work is also something to inspire awe. Most famous for his 5 hour sets, he truly is a DJ which takes you on a journey. Named after his debut album, his "Keep It Unreal" nights have spread from his home town of Manchester to other places across the country. If youre lucky enough to live near London, Edinburgh or Nottingham youll have had the opportunity to pop along and dance your socks off. In fact Mr Scruff has so impressed with his sets, he has been voted Most Creative DJ by readers of iDJ magazine.
A man of many talents, Mr Scruff (formerly a fine art student) is known for his outstanding line drawings which have been seen in publications from 7 Magazine to The Face. They took on another dimension when he animated them for his two videos, one of which can be seen on this promo CD.
