According to Jeff Lynne, songs written while he and Roy worked together were often co-written with whoever started the song getting the publishing credit.
Incidentially "California Man" is credited as a Roy Wood song.

This is one of Michael Martin Murphey's songs. I think he may been done it when he was in "the Lewis and Clark Expedition" (circa 1967) performing under the name Travis Lewis.
Anyway, I first know it as performed by one of his friend's/associate's Michael Nesmith on "Nevada Fighter" (1971)
