Wednesday 1-11-12 in Tucson Arizona. Best viewed in 720p .
From Tanque Verde & Sabino Canyon Road, I rode up to the Molino Campground (cloudy & windy) then zoomed back down the mountain. I didn't stop until I got back home near Tucson International Airport (41 miles total). The Bionx system just dipped below halfway on the battery life indicator when I got to within 2 miles of my front door.
The Bionx made the ascent very easy compared to my regular mountain bike. I averaged between 4 and 6.5 mph on the climb using Assist Level 2 and 3. Oxygen is harder to come by when I'm huffing it up that mountain. If I could do this ride every few days, I could revert back to a regular bike so it's something I want to do when I win the lottery.
This video is just a small portion of the ride which shows the 4000 foot level down to the vista overlook. It's also my first 3D video on YouTube.
The GoPro Cineform Studio software is great for getting the files converted. Screen Plane has been manually readjusted for a more realistic and subtle 3D effect. I could have left it in auto mode and lived with the higher depth but that's harder on the eyes. If you want to see over a cliff or other scenic frames, just push pause (Space Bar). Running the video with Pauses every few seconds is a great sensation.
The Raleigh was moving very fast, even with the Bionx in Regeneration Mode 2 and 3 pulling the speed back down from 30mph to 14-20mph downhill. Bionx programmed the system to give maximum charge below 16mph in order to not break traction at high speeds. That made a trade-off for wanting to get down before dark or just turn on my lights and get the battery charged as much as I could. I chose to max charge it when I saw the airport way off in the distance. Without power regeneration modes to charge the battery back up when I ride back down, I would have to put the bike and myself on a city bus for the trip across town to get back home.
On a future ride up there, I'll take my Exilim camera along and show the airport off in the distance in order to get the big picture of Tucson (Picture in Picture).

12-8-2011 / GoPro 960 Camera / Bionx 48 Volt system installed onto Biria 14-Speed bicycle with 700c tires.
After a one hour ascent, I turned on the GoPro 960 camera for the downhill run. The Bionx was regenerating power back into the lithium battery the entire way down.
Since this ride I've invested in 32GB SD memory cards to get an entire rides video. ________________________________________ Snow covered logs in a truck bed at 6-54.

Raleigh Talus 5.0 mountain bike with a Bionx 48 volt system making the climb up west slope Gates Pass (a piece of cake). Got a ride to the Circle K on Kinney Road then rode the rest of the way up. On the way up the battery indicator went down one or two notches then on the way back down on the east side of the mountain the system charged itself back up to full by the time I got to PCC West. The climb averaged 4 mph with Bionx set to Assist_3. The Assist_4 mode (highest) gets jumpy and jerky plus it takes a lot of battery power to run. By the time I reached the overlook area, the system had automatically derated power throughput due to motor temperature.
The video ends as I make a beeline to the restroom at the overlook area just before starting eastbound down Gates Pass Rd. to Anklam Rd. by nightfall.
Camera is GoPro HD Hero 960 on a handlebar/seatpost mount. The mount was clamped to a 'T' extension that has the Bionx G2 controller on the right with camera on left side. The 2GB card in the camera ran out just as I was to start back down. I'll buy a 32GB card soon. The raw video file was a lot longer in time than what I show here.
The Raleigh Talus 5.0 stock front fork was replaced with Rockshox Reba RL . Both front and rear rims are Bionx 26" with Continental TravelContact tires that have protective strips installed between thorn resistant tubes and tires.
Final assembly of Raleigh (Ajo Bikes) with Bionx 48v system (NYCEwheels) in August 2011. Without the Bionx addition, it would have been impossible to keep riding in the summer. The Bionx made it possible to do scorching hot weather rides with minimal amounts of water bottles (less exertion). Q- How does a bicyclist know that it's scorching hot in Tucson? A- They're the only ones on the road still riding a Bionx based bike.
There were plenty of high-end looking bikes with riders in spandex along the road but I simply put on a long sleeve shirt, cotton pants and slung a daypack over my shoulders. At the start-out parking lot, I applied White Lightning wax-based lube to the chain.

The first gas station stop out of LA to Tucson, AZ. The GoPro camera's AAA batteries were changed for the trip back to Atlantic Blvd & I-10 eastbound. Along this stretch there's very rough pavement and at times I had to make sure my gloves were staying put on the bars by my hands. The cracks in the pavement are visible with the GoPro wide-angle lense. At 65-75 mph some of the highway cracks made the V7C forks jump up and down in a tiring jolt-o-rama.
As I exited through the gas station, I let the V7C run at idle. It is the fastest bike at idle I've ever owned.
At 6-30 I moved into the carpool lane. It took a while to gauge things out for the move because every time I thought I should start there was another car or truck doing 10 to 20 over, zooming past before I could time a gap to get in. The stock mirrors are way short and my two coats plumped up pretty good with the headwind so I'd have to tilt my body to the right to catch the left mirror. In that 1 1/2 seconds of time I had to be accurate about what's going to happen in the next 5 seconds of my maneuver to the leftmost lane (stuff they don't teach in school). Even a successful lane change then has the addition of a periodic glance of approaching traffic from the rear so if someone is doing 80mph and the carpool lane exit line is in another 1 1/2 to 2 miles I'm SOL and have to speed. But that isn't why I wanted the carpool lane.
By minute 8-30 the bridges and pavement of the carpool lane were bouncing me and my V7C real good. When the V7C was new in October 2010 the suspension felt real stiff but after this trip it started to limber up a bit.
At 9-30 Mount Baldy ski slopes (snow) up in the Angeles National Forest is more visible to the left side view. At 11-15 to the right side view is In-N-Out Burger corporate restaurant at Baldwin Park (Francisquito Blvd off of exit 32B). At 11-50 I caught the view of Laidlaw's Harley to the right. I thought back when the V7C was new. At the time, I thought I'd run it out to San Diego to tour and break it in. Boy was I happy I stayed in town. It really needed tender local riding care and constant oil level monitoring because it did use a little until it was broken in. It wasn't until after I put 650 miles on it that the new performance firmware was downloaded into it that made a difference. It was dying at intersections and the valves were in need of a tweak. The head bolts needed tightening too. So when I passed the Harley dealer I was happy knowing I paid my break-in dues and got through it so now I just ride.
At 12-40 I was so windblown and jarred by I-10 pavement, I decided to get off at Pacific Ave. (West Covina) to check the camera. I was blown away that it was still running. I shut it down until I reached desert at Chiriaco Summit (LA3) (LA4) (LA5) clips.

1 of 5. The Guzzi's all packed up in the motel parking garage, idling and ready for taxi to Benton Way. The V7C has tacky tires for carving curves but on smooth parking garage cement, things got a little slippery. The AAA batteries in the GoPro have less than 2 minutes of life but I didn't know that. The neighborhood I'm going to crawl through has tall palm trees plus some picturesque property that's survived the recession - so far.
