Whenever i want to know how an aria should be sung, I always listen to a Gedda recording of it. Perfect style, perfect diction, perfect intonation, the most beautiful mezza voce in all recorded opera, and he could sing anything. He is the tenor that tenors these days need to listen to.

How is it possible to sing this aria with no dynamic whatsoever? I know not everybody can be Nicolai Gedda, but geez. He has a great sound, or rather could have a great sound, but because he's belting the whole time, it's grating to listen to. in this way he is very much a modern singer.

I have to say that I disagree with the characterization of Gedda's voice as lacking sweetness. I find that particularly in his softest voice, he tends to evoke a tone of breathtaking beauty, and yes, sweetness. Examples of this are 'Magische Tone' and 'Je Crois Entendre Encore'.

Thill had the most powerful (and beautiful) voice that I have ever heard, yet he still had the sense to sing softly when he needed to. That alone makes this both an amazing recording, and more unfortunately, a rarity among opera recordings.
