http://gdp.nfb.ca "You gotta spend money to make money." Serbian-Canadian Zoran is investing in the high-end car wash that he acquired 6 years ago. The whole team gets ready for the re-opening bash. It was the early years of the new millennium and Calgary was booming, but labour was in short supply. Zoran had to look abroad to find staff for his carwash, hiring Edgar and four other Filipinos through Canadas Temporary Foreign Worker Program. The stories of two immigrants an entrepreneur and a guest worker intertwine. Acting on the suggestion of UN peacekeepers, Zoran left Serbia 7 years ago to build a new life in Canada. He found work at a Calgary auto-body shop ― before going on to buy Detailz, the upscale carwash. The 37-year-old former footballer is married and has two young kids.

http://gdp.nfb.ca More and more people in Timmins (northern Ontario) are visiting the local food bank. Rick Young and his team of dedicated volunteers respond to the need, inspired by the memory of former NHL player, Father Les Costello. The local economy has diversified over the decades but mining remains key. The current high price of gold has buffered us against the worst of the crisis, says Ron Grech, news editor at the Timmins Times. Our forestry sector has been in decline, like everywhere across the country, but mining has been our saving grace. This being said, food banks are more and more streched as this photo essay shows.

http://gdp.nfb.ca The global meltdown of 2008 was sparked by reckless trading in financial markets, but Duncan - director of Research for Technology, Media & Telecommunications, Life Sciences and GreenTech at Deloitte - views the present crisis within an historic context. Duncan happens to be at the heart of the Canadian equivalent of Londons City and New Yorks Wall Street - a vital organ at the core of the national economy. About 200,000 people work in the district itself but all Canadians feel the effects of Bay Streets decisions.

http://gdp.nfb.ca Charismatic and gifted, Christian was born into an artistic Windsor family. Following a stint in the Big Apple, he returned to the banks of the Detroit River, forging a career as a painter and designer. He delights in grand gestures expressions of his jovial nature. When Im feeling good, I kick ass. When Im uninspired, I start to sink. The economic crisis has put a damper on the Windsor art scene and Christian is getting restless. His giant paintings have been bought and paid for but his clients had to return them for lack of space.

http://gdp.nfb.ca 45-year-old Stuart is a volunteer with the Grand Falls-Windsor (Newfoundland) Fire Department. Following in the steps of his father and grandfather, Stuart started working at the local paper mill as a teenager - almost 28 years ago. In March, 2009, the AbititiBowater mill shut down, putting 700 people out of work. For close to a century the paper mill has been Grand Falls-Windsors main employer. What happens when a company town loses its company? Stuart and his wife Pauline dont have a ready-made answer, but one thing is for sure, leaving is not even an option. When the province offers to help establish cranberry farms in the area, Stuart and his wife Pauline embark on a new career path. Pauline works at the Canadian red Cross since 2001 and has been sharing her life with Stuart for 19 years now. Their partnership is about to enter a new phase.
