*****In December 1982, ten-year-old Samantha Smith wrote a letter to the newly elected Soviet president asking why his country wanted to conquer the United States. Yuri Andropov answered Samantha directly, saying that his country did not wish to fight a war against the United States, and invited Samantha to visit the Soviet Union and meet his people. From the moment Samantha received Presidents Andropovs letter, she was catapulted from her small-town life in Manchester, Maine, into the Limelight of international publicity. The following July Samantha and her parents set out on their two-week journey. Meeting with Kremlin officials in Moscow, a stay at the Pioneer Camp Artek, an evening at the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, a luncheon with the first woman cosmonaut, and much more were all packed into the visit
I remember Samantha's peace trip to Russia being shown on the TV. At the time I was 13 and I regret now that I did not take more interest in this great event.
Unlike US TV, once Sam's peace trip was over, Samantha Smith vanished from the British TV screen and all too quickly she was forgotten about in the UK. Then in August 1985 she reappeared once again on my TV. I remember this so very well because it was just a few days before her untimely death. At once I remembered her! There she was again, this bright, happy, pretty girl who just a couple of years previous woke up the world with that famous letter and words of true wisdom. Samantha was being interviewed live by Nick Ross on the BBC Breakfast show. She was sitting on the red leather sofa, beautifully dressed in a fine yellow blazer and white shorts, her hair hanging loose around her shoulders. Samanthas confidence and warm charming personality shined through the screen at me capturing my heart in an instant, compelling me to watch and listen to her without distraction. I remember her speaking about her acting in Lime Street and also the famous letter which led to her peace trip in 1983. The interview was only short and ended all too soon, but it left me with a lasting impression of her.
At tea time, on Monday 26th August I heard the sad news that Samantha Smith had been tragically killed in a plane crash. I was devastated. I just could not believe it. The bright, beautiful, happy, intelligent girl that had captured my heart only days before was dead! How my heart cried at the loss of this courageous, young lady. Her sudden death made me realise what an amazing and significant thing she had achieved. There was and still is no doubt in my mind that Samantha Smith was someone uniquely special, and that her sweet and gentle innocence which brought about her peace trip, helped to bring the cold war to a peaceful conclusion. Samantha Smith - a gem in the crown of humanity who I am proud to rank as my number one hero.
Samantha's amazing story gave me the inspiration to write several letters of my own to the then US President Reagan offering words of encouragement during the nuclear disarmament talks with Mr Gorbachev, the then leader of USSR. I remember writing in one letter: Samantha Smith would have been very pleased with the progress made. Whether my numerous letters had any real impact in advancing the peace talks further, one can only but wonder. But write them I did, firmly with Samantha's love and inspiration fixed deep in my heart. God Bless You Darling Samantha! All my Love! RJ XXX
