you asked about video crashes in ubuntu, it could be that video drivers are not correctly installed, or you may need a different codec pack, there are also different movie players in the "package manager".

try

sudo gedit /usr/x11/xorg.conf

or

gksudo /usr/x11/xorg.conf

Check the driver list to make sure your card is enabled there.

if so, then try a new player or codec pack, hope it helps.
