coming to a halt in a controlled fashion. Nothing to do with speed limiters at all. You don't actually accelerate, just momentarily apply more torque to counter the blowout. The video regarding fuel economy was equally specious; it has been definitively proven that driving at 50 mph is considera...

I can understand your frustration at nanny state mandated speed limiters but misinterpreting science to pad out your argument isn't helpful to youir cause. The number of accidents caused by blow outs is minimal compred to the number of accidents caused by excessive speed or driver inattention. ...

@earsneyes1
Or read my post. I said that a roots is not a compressor, it's a blower. The boost is built up in the manifold, not in the rotor housing. The benefit is that bypassing is easy; the downside is that the compression is very inefficient. You're quite correct to point out that twin char...

@85raminator
Sadly, you can ALWAYS have too much of a good thing! Start cranking up the ponies and the cylinder pressures and temperatures soar and engine life plummets. Big trucks are for working hard all day, not an occasional blast down the quarter mile. I'm not aware of any heavy available ...

And do you really suppose that clarkson thinks the person responsible for the Audi's malfunctioning trip computer will be shot? Top Gear isn't like a 'Road and Track' review of mid size sedans in which a po-faced presenter solemnly trots out all the data regarding cargo capaci...

I wouldn't take it personally Chevyapache-some people need a computer to change gears for them, and pretend that it's a choice and not simply ineptitude. Probably the same people that phone highway patrol if their accelerator gets stuck open. Once the computer stops driving f...

romania drag race golf 4 turbodiesel vs porsche 997 turbo
@JL2579
Yes, but the salient point is that if you fix the RPM, then if you double the torque then you also double the horsepower. Diesels produce more torque and hence more horsepower at low speeds. My point is that the tractive effort at the wheels is independant of the path taken. The wheels ...

I misread one of your statements. In fact you did state that torque at the wheels (ie tractive effort) was what detrermined acceleration. Apologies. I thought you were one ofthe muppets that will try to argue that engine output torque is relevant to acceleration, which of course is not.

I'm not arguing with Sir Isaac. F=ma is applicable once you have subtracted frictional losses due to rolling resistance and air resistance. Work done = force*distance. Throw in time and you get: Power=force*velocity. The tractive effort at the drive wheels is far greater than the engin...

Sorry but that's crap. The transmission takes care of lack of torque. Gearing multiplies torque, but it can't multiply power. In fact, given a suitable transmission, torque drops out of the equation. That said, low RPM torque is related to low RPM horsepower which is usually more import...

because of the lack of performance orientated parts specfic to the 305. The bore stroke ratio of the 305 is basically the same as the sbc 383 and the bbc 454 and few people complain about those engines being boat anchors. The 305 is short of cubic inches, but with thought, it is possibl...

As far as street use is concerned, far too much noise is made about big valves and big bores. In the 60s when airflow was poorly understood 'going large' on everything seemed to be the only way to make power. But the LS1 has a narrower bore than the old sbc 350 yet has no trouble ...

Quick Question: are you starting out in 3rd under or 1st under? If it's 1st, that truck must have a really tall rear end, if it's 3rd it does well to pull away from a dead stop! Beautiful changing by the way.

4.25" stroke @8000RPM? Very high piston speed, massive ring friction and stress on rods. It is possible, but it doesn't make a lot of sense. Any steet head/cam combination on a two valve engine stops flowing way before 8000 grand.
