Ban Rodenticides!
Rodenticides blanket kill all animals in the area; including pets (cats, dogs, rabbits, etc), song birds (especially robins) raptors, all wildlife (hedgehogs, etc), endangered species, and human children (because its blue and looks like sweets and tastes sweet) in their thousands and globally. It is an agonising and slow death. More people die from rat poison ingestion yearly than have ever died from anything caught from a rat.
Rat poison always makes a problem worse because it kills all the competition and all predators which naturally keep the rodent populations in check. The re-occupation by rats is then always far more successful. But the rodenticide companies know this and count on it so that you keep buying from them because your rodent problem will never go away
The best way to remove rats is to use a deterrent (like Shake Away) which contains predator urine. Its really effective (I speak from experience). Also effective are the plug in sonic devices, and live trapping (to re-locate to a safe place away from humans). Most importantly and effectively remove what ever it is that attracted them in the first place (usually a food supply in the form of human rubbish/waste). Good house keeping prevents unwanted house guests.
Facts about Rats
They did not cause the plague. When recent plagues have swept across India the rat temple has remained plague free, the significant factor is that they have banned dogs from the area. Also Iceland had no rats at all at the time of the black death yet two thirds of the population died from it. So either the plague was spread by fleas on dogs or it had nothing to do with fleas at all. Either way the rats are not the cause. In fact several genetic tests on the teeth from graves containing plague victims show no evidence of Y.pestis at all. Modern investigations have revealed that the plague was the result of a highly infectious virus spread from human to human (2004 Scott/Duncan - Return of the Black Death).
Weils is not a threat
Rodenticide and pest control companies try to tell us that we need to kill rats because we will catch diseases. Well the fact is that you are more likely to die in a plane crash (odds are 1 in 20000) than catch anything from a rat. Or more likely to die in childbirth or catch something fatal from another human. Weils is not actually caused by rats. It is caused by the rotting of animal remains in fresh water and usually occurs around livestock farms. In the UK only 1 in a million people ever get it (about 52 cases a year) and they are mostly slaughter men, farm workers, anglers, and canoeists. You have to have an open fresh wound for the bacteria to enter your body and direct contact with the contaminated water. So its difficult to catch and very rare.
Rats are not a threat, more people die from dog attacks than even catch anything from a rat. Cats, dogs and humans carry more diseases than rats.
Rodenticides are unnecessary and dangerous and need to be banned.
