Irrationality, even if it doesn't impose on the world at large, grants credence to other irrational beliefs that can be destructive to the world. The moderate Christian, who grants legitimacy to the supernatural, automatically lends legitimacy to the fundamentalist, because by acknowledging that certain beliefs are sacrosanct, the moderate has lost the very tool by which he can correct the fundamentalist - which is reason itself.
