Just added the story of how the birch tree got it's markings to the Playlist called 'Inspiration'. Earl Nyholm, a member of the Ojibwe Nation, is collecting bark for a canoe. Birch bark can be removed fairly easily from living trees. It should be collected in spring when the tree has more sap. Removing the outer (light) layer of bark from the trunk of a living tree will weaken it making it more prone to infection. Removal of the inner (dark) layer prevents the flow of sap and will kill the tree.
