Listening to John Coltrane is like having a direct conduit to Music and the Infinite. He never fails to astonish me. A Love Supreme is, in my opinion, his most fully-realized work; extremely powerful and humble/devoted, all at the same time. Extraordinary.

This is a gorgeous version of Shadows and Light. I think Joni and Jaco are so good together because their sound is two sympathetic voices in counterpoint: Joni's mid-high female and Jaco's mid-low male.

It's an understatement to say that this performance by Mr. Kessel is completely breathtaking. Great rhythm, chord melody work, and sense of form. I particularly love the blues influence that comes in at times. After all that though, my main reaction is simply "Wow"!

This recording was the first time I encountered Mr. Tony Williams' drumming. The awe I felt then is just as strong today. It's something about his ability to combine looseness, unpredictability, and intensity/power. He adds so much to every performance! This one is classic.

Yes. "Pretty Fat" is the name of a vocal group that Bootsy Collins produced.

One word: Brilliant.

One of the recordings that has had an immediate impact on me. In the same category as Bill Evans' Vanguard Sessions, Heavy Weather, the Metheny Group's white album, Court and Spark and Mingus, Gary Peacock's Tales of Another, almost anything of Peter Gabriel's and Kate Bush's, and Kind of Blue.

This story makes me smile every time I listen to it. George Benson and Pat Martino - two great human beings who happen to be masters of music and the guitar.

Two names I would prefer not to hear in 2011: Palin and Kardashian.

It would be encouraging to hear anyone, at any location on the political spectrum, suggest or acknowledge that certain comments and imagery are neither constructive nor helpful to political debate. Expecting this from Sarah Palin is wishful thinking, but many others are not doing any better.
