About Me:
Florence is a center for symphonic and ensemble music performance, opera, theatre, jazz, composition, film scoring, music business, and music technology.
As the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, home to innumerable art and architectural landmarks and as a living music center, Florence provides a unique setting in which to study, experience and perform music. Through lectures, individual lessons, ensembles, open rehearsals, guest talks, masterclasses, recording sessions and live performances, the NYU in Florence Music Program opens a global perspective on music studies as a key ingredient in the education and preparation for the professional world. Semester-long program with full music curricula offered at NYU in FLORENCE every Spring.
SPRING 2009 FEATURES:
- 2 Master classes - Ernst Reijseger, Federico Bardazzi
- 2 Lectures - Carlo Serafini -
- 1 Concert/Lessonat the Teatro Verdi with Uri Caine open to NYU students.
- 2 recording session with Battista Lena
-Weekly Jam Sessions in Florence throughout the semester at La Citè, Jazz Club, and Caffé degli Artigiani, Porto di Mare.
-The NYU in Florence Music Program challenged its best student ensembles with 30 performances in some of the most prestigious venues of Italy, from the Grand Salone and the Limonaia of NYU's own Villa la Pietra to the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral of Florence, the "Il Torrione" Jazz Club in Ferrara, the "Take Five Club" in Bologna, Pordenone's "Live Music Recording Studio", Macerata's "Jazz Club", and the famous "Blue Note Jazz Club" in Milano.
-The Gershwin Songbook Project is the result of a collaborative effort of seven vocalists from the NYU Music Theatre Department and seven jazz musicians from the NYU Jazz Studies Department during the Spring 2009 semester in Florence. Gershwin's hits and some less famous jewels have been re-arranged for a breathtaking musical experience. The Gershwin Project has been performed at the Porto di Mare Music Club in Florence ( 4/26/09 ) and at The Grand Salone of Villa La Pietra ( 4/27/09 )

I'm surprised, most students I speak to at NYU think Italy would be great, but they're worried they will miss out on all of the faculty and opportunities New York has. My time in Italy exposed me to different influences that I could not have gotten in New York though, and I generally felt there was a higher standard of teaching and expectations in Florence. It is an experience I will treasure forever but continues to live with me in each day moving forward. Grazie mille Antonio.

I had more opportunities to play on a grand stage, all around Italy, than in New York. I was given personal attention as a musician and student. While playing all over the country, I found the Italians had such an appreciation for the music I played with my group and our heritage as American jazz musicians, bringing our culture overseas, while we were also able to absorb much of the Italian culture into our own. Every teacher was hand-picked to meet the highest standards of music education, and the integration across the music program, between theater, jazz, opera, classical, and composition majors was unparalleled.

As time passes, I realize more and more how great my semester in Florence was. The music aspect was obviously incredible but living in Florence, absorbing the Italian culture, traveling around Europe, meeting locals...it was all really incredible. Grazie mille Antonio per tuo lavoro e aiuto!
