I bought my first guitar when I was in 4th grade because I got good grades and my Dad was feeling generous. It was one of those $90 Takamine Jazmine acoustics that only beginners are amazed by, but hey, I loved it. Of course, I thought it'd be easy to learn how to play and it wouldn't hurt like a jieofkng. I was quickly proven wrong and basically gave up in fear of my fingers falling off.
Years later, I really picked guitar when I was 12 years old, Taylor Swift being a huge motivating factor because, despite what people say about her music being all about love and boys and fairytales, she's still an awesome musician. I found out how to read chord diagrams and learned popular chords (Em, C, G, D, Am, you get the gist) and began to learn some of Taylor's songs, in addition to writing my own little cheesy ones about how complicated it is being a teenager. Ahh, and the clichés began.
I tried lessons eventually, but it just wasn't my thing. It was easier to come home from school, look up the chords to a song online, and learn it in 20 minutes than to have some old guy teach me 3 note songs once a week. No offense, old guy. After I had a few songs written, my parents bought me some studio time and 3 of my songs were recorded professionally. Those can be heard on my myspace if you feel inclined to hear 12 year old me singing/playing ("I Gotta Be Me," "My Time To Shine," "You're You").
As far as singing goes, the earliest songs I remember singing are Kelly Clarkson's old stuff, like right after she won American Idol. I basically thought I was her when I was 7 years old. Good times. I've been in choir since it's been offered because playing the cello seemed too difficult.
Fast forward to today, I'm a junior in High School, I'm in a few choirs, and I've written about 30 original songs. I'm more into doing covers, but occasionally I'll post an original. I'd love for my music to be well known on youtube someday and maybe even in real life, but who knows. In the meantime, it's a lot of fun to produce videos and perform for people worldwide through technology :D If you read all of this, I owe you a cookie.
