Mumiy Troll is a good example of the success and longevity of an independent band. The band has released eight studio albums, recorded and produced soundtracks for the film "Pohititeli knig" (Book Thieves), the animated film "Neznayka and Barrabas" and the sci-fi film "Flight to the Moon" (1936) as well as writing songs for a number of other films including the Russian blockbuster "Nightwatch" where Ilya memorably played a vampire. Mumiy Troll musicians have worked together for over ten years. Yuri Tsaler is one of the top guitarists in Russia and co-author of several of the band's tracks. Oleg Pungin started his career as a drummer age 7 and assists a number of Russian bands in their recordings. Bassist Sdwig is the man who brings high technologies to the band.
Mumiy Troll were the first Russian band to support the global health organisation PSI in its fight against AIDS in Russia. Ilya Lagutenko is a Patron of the Anglo-Russian Amur fund for the protection of Amur tigers and Far-Eastern leopards and represents Russia in the International Tiger Coalition, working alongside Harrison Ford who represents the US
In November 2010 Mumiy Troll performed in the Mikhailovsky Theatre in St-Petersburg as part of the Tiger Summit, which brought together the heads of state and musicians from 13 countries taking part in the Tiger Initiative. Ilya Lagutenko was one of the drivers of the programme, as well as co-presenting the "Save the Tiger" concert alongside supermodel Naomi Campbell. Mumiy Troll were the only Russian band to perform - alongside musicians from China and Malaysia - at the Mikhailovsky Theatre concert, after the official part of the summit was concluded.
Mumiy Troll was the first Russian band and one of the first in the world to create its own social network Ikra.tv. The site has attracted thousands of people from all over the world - everyone has their own page featuring a blog, photos, music and videos. At present Ikra.tv runs its own music chart, finds talented photographers, musicians and video-clip makers as well as hosting a range of competitions for Mumiy Troll fans.
Since the day Mumiy Troll first started playing live, the band has been a sought-after presence at some of the biggest music festivals in Russia and abroad. The band's concert tours see them play at the country's biggest venues in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well as appearing in smaller clubs in the Far East, Siberia and Southern parts of Russia - it is practically impossible to think of a region or City where Mumiy Troll have not played at least once. The band's performances at flagships of the Russian Navy and acting war ships have become a tradition - Mumiy Troll remains loyal to naval traditions and the romance of the sea, which was once again reflected in the release of their "Navy Tour" DVD. Even Mumiy Troll's more down to earth gigs always create a stir; presenting an unforgettable show in the best traditions of rock. The band have played in locations as diverse as the USA, Japan, Hong Kong and France, they have reached Greenland, Uzbekistan and South Africa - there are fewer and fewer territories on the map that have not been conquered by Mumiy Troll. In North America alone, the band have played over 100 gigs. Mumiy Troll's international musical language is received well everywhere: audiences sing along as enthusiastically in Sonora in Mexico as they do in the Russian city of Magadan.
Concerts on warships and at children's festivals, in the crater of a live volcano and in tiny rock bars, Ilya Lagutenko's charity work combined with his position as a visiting lecturer at the Far Eastern University in Vladivostok, cinema voice-overs, ultra-modern sound and regular nods to the traditions of classic 60s rock, experiments in design and literature - Mumiy Troll find a time for everything. With epoch-making shows, dozens of memorable and provocative video-clips, an awe-inspiring collection of musical awards and prizes, love of audiences at home and abroad, Mumiy Troll is a band that does not stand still today any more than it did 15 years ago. It is a band unlike any other, a band in love with rock and a band that will never forget how to surprise.
