in the past there were few channels on t.v people settled for watching poor programs because there was nothing else on.they would say things like "this is shit i can't believe people watch this shit"(while watching the shit) and find amusement in criticizing the content. as time moves forward the days of "nothing being on" are becoming rarer.people don't have to watch shit anymore all can watch pretty much what they want when they want,but some hark back to the old days of shit so they make there own shit and call it poop.
