This doest not look like a fail to me. Piece of beef was probably a bit too large for everything to fit perfectly and the puff pastry seemed a bit wet (maybe too much egg, but i'm not sure).
Just one thing...you can't use a blender whitout liquid. You need a food processor for these kind of job,...

That is actually exactly the point Dawkins is making. Every specie is somewhat linked together and as remnant of useless DNA all over the place. If you map out the % of ressemblance you actually get an incredibly nice tree of life.
