I've been playing guitar since I was 13. I'm totally self-taught. I've not had a single lesson, consequently - I've developed my own techniques. This channel features my progress in the genre of 'solo fingerstyle' or 'chord melody' guitar. Inspired by watching the videos of the best player I've found on YOUTUBE (or anywhere else!), a guy who calls himself 'Troubleclef' aka Tony. So, if you like it - thank him. If you don't like it - blame him. If you are a guitarist or a music lover and have never heard of him, do yourself a favor and watch his version of Sly and the Family Stone's 'Hot fun in the summertime'. It is the musical equal of 'shock and awe'. Then you might understand why I've chosen this path. I really got into it a few months before the date of my first video, sometime around October 2007. That's when I put down the pick and started to teach myself to play without one. I should make it clear to anyone from the college that I work at that I do not represent Baldwin Wallace College in any way other than the fact that I work there. Like I said - I've never paid anyone for musical instruction ever. My talent comes from desire and determination. The only reason I mention the college at all in my video tags is so the people who see me play live there can find my videos easier.... I originally started this channel with the intention to eventually do lessons. My outlook has changed. I think the best way is to do it like I did - on your own. Please don't ask for tabs or lessons - everything I do is available to learn in other places (read my video descriptions!) If I say I adapted something from somewhere, it usually means I simplified it - either in finger picking pattern, fretboard/chord position or both. Some times I will add or subtract things. My own brain and ears and eyes play into it a lot. Since I've never had a teacher and was not graced with any real 'natural' talent, I've had to work REALLY hard to get to my current skill level. Any mistakes you hear are un-avoidable for me. I can practice all day long and sound brilliant. Once the camera starts rolling though, I can never seem to capture that 'one perfect take.' There are people on YOUTUBE already who are WAY better than me(maybe they're the ones who HAD lessons!). Accept your limitations or move past them like I did and continually try to do. Do the work if you want to get better - no one else can do it for you! That being said, let me close by saying that my goal here is to at the very least entertain you, and at the most to inspire you.... Mike
