Letter Pieces
"Letter Pieces" are a series of pieces for visual-performer & musician that I began composing in 2007.
Each piece is fixed and scored although there is a
considerable degree of openness in how they are realised - players have large scope for decision-making.
To put it simply: I have created the structure and the players create the content. Two enactments of the same piece will look/sound entirely different.
In the score, letters represent each respective visual and sonic entity. For instance, if the performer and musician are each asked to create five entities, they are respectively labeled A, B, C, D & E.
The performer part may be performed by any visual performer, e.g. dancer, clown, puppet, performance artist, actor etc. Each of these examples is suggestive of a specific visual language, but the part may simply be performed by anyone, using any visual language.
The musician part may be performed by any vocalist or instrumentalist, and may use any conventional or non-conventional instrument(s).
