Ad un certo punto le amicizie raggiungono un equilibrio tra il ricordo del tempo passato e il futuro all'orizzonte; iniziano a disfarsi con la tacita consapevolezza che quello che conserva la memoria supera qualsiasi cosa potrà nascere nel futuro. A questo può seguire la consapevolezza che l'amicizia è tutta basata sulla memoria, quando non c'è nient'altro che la memoria, e che per proteggere questi ricordi è meglio porle fine. Questo è il motivo per cui
spesso si prova una sensazione di notevole soddisfazione nel sapere che un'amicizia è realmente finita.
