looking at those shots, I also think he couldn't have used an umbrella - the shadow edges are simply too "sharp". Well, the Rode on its own was worse due to there being more background noise (hiss from the AGC - this was noticeable to me without even having to turn up the volume), but it's definitely better with Magic Lantern and also has less echo from the hard-walled room.

The last image was definitely the best one.
The engaged couple - that globe is a light and I think he missed a trick here . If only he could have had that lit, it would have added to the atmosphere, especially if it looked like that was the only source of light on the scene.

@moxymagic You set the background to 1 - 2 stops brighter than that of the subject, which is what makes it over exposed. It's not recommended to go any higher as you may then start getting spill light from the background affecting the subject
