Per your channel message, I took a look and I noticed the same thing. I don't care for the new layout, but since Youtube will be going to this layout in the near future, I figured I would switch my channel to the new layout and make it look as good as I could make it.
I had to dig a bit to even find the channel comments (or as they call it in email, profile comments)
Gone is the add as friend and send message as you pointed out. I will probably do a vid and a blog post on it. I can't believe YouTube left this feature out and it's disappointing to say the least.
