You can tell you are not a woodturner. You are using a pretty old school technique - using a scraper instead of a gouge which will generally provide a smoother cut.

The Dec 2010 issue of American Woodturner has an article on making your own taps. A 3/4 - 10tpi bolt can be picked up at your local hardware store. This is an alternative to buying a tap. I tried it and it works.
