About this user
actor, director, artists-facilitator, teacher, cultural researcher
Marvin began working in theatre as a teenager. With his community group, the Mt. Dor Cultural Performers, he became involved in producing performances primarily for the Best Village stage. As a young actor he was drawn to the Department of Creative and Festival Arts which was then the Creative Arts Centre seeking training in his craft. At the Centre (as the department is still affectionately called) Marvin would have the privilege to work with some of the Caribbean's leading directors and playwrights including Rawle Gibbons, Tony Hall, Louis Mc Williams, Rhoma Spencer, and the Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott. As actor he has worked extensively on the departments student productions since 1995, and was twice nominated for the National Drama Association of Trinidad and Tobago Cacique award for his performances in Elma Francois: The Fire Inside (2000) and An Evening of August (2005). He has also done work with Canboulay Productions, Lord Street Theatre Company and Trinidad Theatre Workshop. Marvin, who is also a graduate of the department (BA Hons.Theatre Arts), has also functioned as both administrator and artist facilitator with Arts-in-Action, the Applied Creative Arts outreach unit at the department. Given his work at Arts-in-Action and the offer of a Commonwealth Scholarship award in 2006, to read for his MA in Theatre and Development at the University of Leeds, Marvin was afforded the opportunity to serve as a Lead Artist and Director on performance projects with Manchesters Contact Theatre (Contacting the World 2004 and 2006), Leeds Young Authors Footprints (2007) and as a visiting artist on Geraldine Connors Carnival Messiah at Harewood (2007). Still, notwithstanding his work as a director on Banwari Earth (2005), which was produced for the International Association of Caribbean Archeologists, and more recently as assistant-director on Rawle Gibbonss Ogun Iyan As In Pan which was directed by Louis Mc Williams and presented at CARIFESTA X in Guyana (2008), he sees Fragments: celebrating the works of Derek Walcott (2009, which he co-directed with Louis Mc Williams) as his first major directing project. Marvin is also the co-Artistic Director of Pickney Productions (a company formed recently with his wife, Camille Quamina), and Artistic Director of Arts-in-Action.
