Oh by the way, check to see if they put floating pistons in it, if they did they're going to knock. I had a 67 hemi gtx with floating pistons, sounded like a rod knock. Ran it consistently in the low 9s for 7 years before I sold it.

broken piston skirt, my zj sounded exactly like that. I pulled the pan and had the skirt for number 5 laying in my oil pan. if you havnt gone too long with it like that, you should be able to pull the broken piston and clean up the cylinder walls and lightly hone it and throw a new piston in it. ...

Just because its 95 degrees outside doesn't mean you don't close the choke. If its a cold start it still needs to be closed not necessarily all the way though. It could also have dirty carbs/air filter or the valves need adjusted but start with the easy things first
