La Bande di SandroLed by Sandro Donati this band plays an eclectic repertoire of music influenced by the music of the Carribean, New Orleans and the islands within the Gulf of Mexico.
The unique sound of the band is an echo of the string / brass combination of the early son and danson traditions of that region, in particular Cuba. The combination of guitar, cavaquinho, double bass and bass drum supplying the rhythmic and harmonic component and trumpet, and saxophones providing melody and interplay create a sound that is soft, swinging and thoroughly engaging.
The repertoire draws from many different sources.
Progjet Friul
This project allows the band to introduce into their repertoire the folk music and villotte of Sandros birthplace Fruili, a northeast region of Italy bordering Austria and Slovenia. With its own language (Furlan) and culture, Fruili has a rich tradition of village folk songs dealing with time old aspects of family, life, love and war. Within the songs there is a tone of rascality and healthy disrespect for authority that permeates village life.
The band's anachronic approach to this folk music takes it out of its usual environment and plants it in the swing / Latin based sounds of the Bande di Sandro's more typical repertoire.
The songs are sung in Furlan, the language of the region. Unlike most other parts of Italy that have discernible dialects, Fruili has its own language which is of the Rheto-Romance group along with Ladin and Romansch.
